The weather is starting to change, the days are getting longer and everyone is getting excited to spend more time in our yards. As I basked in the sun in my backyard, I started to feel anxious about all the spring tasks that lay at hand to get my yard ready for summer BBQs. One of the wonderful things about living in the Eastern Sierras is that we get to experience the 4 seasons, the spring weather tends to be a little moody, you never know what’s in store week to week. It wasn’t that long ago snow was falling late into spring and we could ski until August.
The Yard Experts at High Country Lumber’s Garden Center are ready to help you create a plan of attack for the lawn and their small engine mechanics are ready to tune up and repair all those power tools you haven’t touched since fall.
Some climates allow you to start preparing your yard in February, but locally the most you want to do in February is prune your trees while they are still dormant or water your lawn on those warm days. The best time to start getting your yard ready for spring and summer is mid-March to mid-April. If you haven’t started spring prep by mid- April you have some catching up to do.
Did you know that high foot traffic (including pets, children and lawn mowers) will compact your yards soil, making it hard for your lawns to absorb oxygen, water and nutrients. If you take the time to aerate, your lawn will show you thanks by being lusher and greener! You will want to let your lawn aerate for 2 to 4 weeks before mowing, so if you are worried about a messy looking yard cut your lawns to 1 ½” to 2” before you aerate.
Fall may be the ideal time to aerate to avoid weed growth, but early spring will work if needed. You will want to wait at least 2 weeks after aerating before treating your lawn with any weed killer or fertilizer. High Country Lumber is pretty excited about a new program they are now offering customers, the Yard RX Lawn Care program will help you know what is right for your yard. Visit acehardware.com, enter in your address, select the type of grass you have and they will show you the right products to treat your yard for each season. Once your lawn has been treated for weeds and fed with some yummy fertilizer, let it set for a couple days then it is time to start watering your lawn. If you found this helpful and you are looking for more spring yard tips and tricks, acehardware.com has all the answers.
